The Pen Part Bowie Knife – Fun YouTube Build ~ Made By Kyle Royer

This knife was a fun YouTube challenge build, forged from about 900 click-pen springs just to see if it could be done. It turned into a bold two-tone Damascus sand-mai blade with a striking pattern, paired with a big, sculpted curly mango handle in deep purple.

Performance Notes (tested on video)

  • Sharpness: hair-popping edge after finish grind and sharpening

  • Field tests: clean paper cuts, wood chops, and multiple bottle cuts; edge stayed shaving-sharp after chopping

Full Transparency (read before buying)

This was an experimental, fast-paced build made for YouTube entertainment. It is priced accordingly and does not carry my museum-grade standard.

  • Hardness: Rockwell readings 55–57 HRC (my usual for this size is 58–60)

  • Translation: excellent everyday cutting, but under abusive chopping on very hard materials the edge may roll slightly sooner than my top-tier customs

  • Symmetry and straightness: overall very good, but not obsessively tuned. With a critical eye you may find small variances such as a micro-warp or the edge not perfectly centered

  • Plunge lines: clean and close, but not museum-grade perfect

  • Sand-mai line at tang: tiny non-welded spot about 1/8” at the very end of the tang. Cosmetic only and does not affect performance

  • Finish wear: after 1x4 chop tests there are a few faint micro-scratches in the dark layer. Too minor to refinish and shown in the video

  • Logo choice: uses our Royer company logo. My “Kyle Royer MS” mark is reserved for knives that meet my highest, month-long build standards
